Tyrrell 006 pictures arrived!

May 14, 2011

Thomas one of my twin 16 year old sons, has done a stirling IT job whilst studying for his GCSE’s and put my selection of work-in-progress pictures for the Tyrrell 006 I am currently building. We need to spend time annotating the pictures and will add a few more in time when appropriate, so there will be a few more additions.
I hope the text added in the last 2-3 weeks has been informative and worth reading. Currently, the main work is slowed because I am producing some duplicate bodywork parts to supplement the full-bodied Monaco winning car (as so far seen), to enable the model to be displayed as that driven in Britain/Germany (abbreviated sidepods, no rear deck, upgraded finish on airbox surface, new rear wing) and Canada/US (no sidepods or rear deck, airbox as GB and Germany, re-sited oil coolers). God-willing, with all this additional new work, the model will be completed by the autumn or not long after. The decals are well under way and with the louvres/micro-hinges all but completed, soon the paintcode used for the restored Tyrrell 006/2 will be available and paint made-up.

Happy Easter! New 006 photos.

April 24, 2011

Christ has died (for our sins) Christ has risen (today) and Christ will come again (to judge and reign forever)! We can know true peace, ‘being right with God’, through our Lord Jesus. ‘No guilt in life, no fear in death’, as the Hymn says; also Romans 4, verse 25.

Whilst working most days on the Tyrrell 006, the model is much advanced in small detail over that seen in the photos already posted. However, I hope to bring a further collection of photos to give you confidence it is coming along towards it’s intended deadline of autumn 2011. These should appear within the next two weeks.

Currently, decals are being made (Paul R) and draft prints of these have been cut out and applied to the model to test for fit. Most of the fabrication is complete and a lot of detail work associated with dry-fitting is constantly being worked-on. Currently a little lathe work and some more resin casting is still to be done and there are a few areas where strategy hasn’t been worked-out yet (louvres and hinged flaps), but it’s just a matter of time, slowly accumulating the problem-solving approach to manufacture.

Once again, Happy Easter!

Recent visitors, from Autosport Nostalgia forum and F1M

March 19, 2011

Thank you very much for visiting this site from autosport.com, nostalgia forum and from F1 modelling website, F1M. Thanks to Doug Nye (Motor Sport magazine) for posting the original thread on the Autosport.com Bulletin Board, nostalgia forum and for his continued contributions.

I am delighted you enjoy seeing this work, each car being for me increasingly like owning something, nearer to the real thing. Your observations concerning Tamiya etc are correct in that indeed the earlier models were simply that, straight out of the box, perhaps with some improvement. Increasingly though, they are scratch-built apart from engine block (DFV often) and wheel rims/tyres. In recent years (since the BT44 and 44B), I have used resin casts of my significantly improved Tamiya Hewland FG400 gearbox, rather than the inaccurate item in the box (as well as looking better, it makes me feel better about the completed car). Additionally, for latest on-going project (1973 Tyrrell 006, due autumn 2011), I have been producing all the round parts on a lathe, using aluminium which improves the appearance and means I can make more parts, but does take longer (two years per car, rather than one year). As for the site, I am adding text often (weekly) and supplying photos to my 16 year old son Thomas, to work the website magic.

I have really enjoyed seeing the fantastic work by capri-schorsch on F1M, namely the 1/12 Tamiya JPS III, Ferrari 312B and the Honda RA273, thank you for mentioning these in your post, models which have been beautifully and sensitively super-detailed and in the latter two cases, provided within skilful diorama settings.

Happy Birthday Alain Prost

February 24, 2011

Alain Prost (24/2/55), my favourite driver following Emerson Fittipaldi drove conservatively to win, with consummate skill and ruthlessness when required, always driving smoothly such that his speed was often unnoticed. In the vein of Emerson himself, Jackie Stewart and Niki Lauda, Alain Prost was recognised as being one of the most complete drivers of the era, Nigel Roebuck motorsport journalist, often celebrating Alain’s overall impact on the sport. Whilst frequently in the right car at the right time, four times World Champion driver Alain, was also able to manage people around him to ensure success as a driver. Patience Rewarded! New photos

February 14, 2011

The new set of photos have largely been uploaded and whilst not perfect in some aspects are a good interim measure. Thomas will complete this upgrade, during the next week or so hopefully, whilst I set about adding more text where appropriate, I having been working on a set of photos to cover quite a few past projects (stretching back into the 1990’s).  Thomas who continues to diligently work towards his GCSE’s, has started to put them on when he can; Thomas‘ work on the website has been wonderful I’m sure you agree. Therefore, watch this space over the next few weeks, as this upgrade is completed. Thank you for your patience and for visiting. After that, I have plans for retaking more photos (April/May hopefully) and so over the months of this year, more and more will be added at intervals. Meanwhile, I will be working on the Tyrrell 006 between work, family commitments, church life and the website. If you have any great ideas about improvements to make the website even more enjoyable, do get in touch!

Derek Gardner, sadly missed

January 17, 2011

Designer of Tyrrell Formula One cars of the early 70’s (001 – 007 and P34) has passed-away (Jan 7th) after long illness. Tributes in Autosport and on Internet bring variety of praise for this gentle and humble genius. Having met Derek once and chatted on the telephone several times over the years since, I would like to honour him with these thoughts and by continuing with my own Tyrrell (and Lotus 56B turbine) projects, about which Derek lent his valuable comments, to help me on my way. What better way to bring blessing to Margaret and daughters Rachel and Helen, than to celebrate Derek with completion of these projects over the coming years (006/2 due completion in summer/autumn 2011. Monocoques oo1, 1974 and  1975 oo7’s waiting in the wings).

BT44/44B photos now added

January 5, 2011

Thank you everyone for taking a keen interest in the site. I have noticed that the Brabham BT44/44B is of great interest to many of you and I have recently received high quality photographs of these two models, which I have now sorted through. Some need re-taking, so I have posted a first batch of more detail photos and recommend you look every month or so. Photos of the other pre-digital era models should start appearing over the next few months as well. There’s a second photographic session planned to improve the range and scope of what I would like to show, including improved replacements of some of the BT44/44B photographs. For those who wish to see more of the McLaren M23/5, because I no longer own this model, I will endeavour to search the archive for suitable extra photos. Why not post a contact message, requesting what in particular of the M23 etc, you are wanting to see more of.

Happy Birthday Lord Jesus

December 25, 2010

Happy Christmas to you all! Amid the excitement and busyness of the day, I hope to remember God’s love to us in His provision of a Saviour, His Son Jesus whose life on earth and ultimate death on the cross is the means by which we can be saved and accepted by God. This is a personal view and gives me a perspective on my love for Grand Prix cars and the fascination for their technical and artistic brilliance.

Happy Christmas everyone!

December 23, 2010

I hope all your wishes and plans work out this Christmas and that you have a wonderful few days; perhaps a special time with family, presents (even a racecar model maybe!), good food, or a chance to get away somewhere warm hopefully.
May I take this opportunity to express thanks to God for sending His dear son, the Lord Jesus to be born on earth at Christmas time.
‘For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life…’ John 3, verse 16.
– Mark.
